Cultural campus progress

The Bridge is the collective name for John Wheatley College, Easterhouse Swimming Pool, Easterhouse Library and the new arts facility called Platform.

One of the most exciting community leisure, arts and learning projects ever proposed for Scotland is being created in the heart of Greater Easterhouse.

The Bridge consists of three distinct yet totally integrated project components, the new building (replacement) John Wheatley College, Platform - the new arts facility which houses the new public library, and the refurbished local authority Swimming Pool.

Greater Easterhouse Social Inclusion Partnership is driving the £9.5m project, which is fully supported by the community and local arts groups.

PlatformPlatform arts centre

Platform will form the hub of The Bridge providing arts training facilities that will encourage wider involvement and access to the Arts. Arts provision will focus primarily on performing and visual arts with the provision of a flexible auditorium, a rehearsal studio, and a photography suite and multi-media studio.

Library

Contained within Platform and linked to the new John Wheatley College building will be the new community library, which is being redeveloped as a centre for Lifelong Learning.

Swimming pool

The refurbishment of the swimming pool will see the provision of a 25m pool, a range of water features, a baby and learner pool and a health suite overlooking the pool.

Funding

Social Inclusion Partnership funds of £0.5m have levered in a further £9m. Key funders include Glasgow City Council (£3.86m), Scottish Arts Council (£2.2m), European Regional Development Fund (£1.88m) and Sportscotland (£0.7m).

The design of The Bridge will encourage opportunities for people to access learning, leisure and arts activities and to meet people in an relaxed, welcoming and barrier free atmosphere.

Summer 2006 sees the opening of the Campus with the building becoming the focus for all cultural and recreational activities in Greater Easterhouse
