Latest Update

Survey 1 – Local Environment
The first survey of the People’s Panel was carried out in October-November 2001, with over 800 local people contacted to give their views on issues including satisfaction with local neighbourhoods, the appearance of the local environment; safety issues; leisure and recreation and community activities. 360 local people of all ages and backgrounds completed Panel questionnaires, and the findings highlight a number of local priorities and concerns that the Greater Easterhouse Partnership, local projects and partner agencies continue to take forward. These include the development of new recreation, safety and environmental projects and improvements across Greater Easterhouse.

Survey 2 – Childcare, Training & Learning
The second survey took place over the Summer of 2002. This focused on local people’s views, experiences and access to training, childcare and all sorts of education and learning opportunities. The main results were reported to a wide range of local agencies, including John Wheatley college and Childcare Greater Easterhouse, who are working together to respond to issues raised by the Panel, and to improve access to facilities, opportunities and information for everyone. There is a summary of results below – you can also find out more in the report itself, or in the Panel newsletter, by clicking on the links.

Survey 3 – Image and Communication
In addition, a third survey (Nov-Jan 2003) is just about to be completed. This explores perceptions of the image of Greater Easterhouse, and awareness of some big local developments. The Partnership has also asked for member’s views on its quarterly magazine “PQ”. The results will help the Partnership develop it’s image and communication activities, and will be posted here in February 2003.

Panel Newsletter & Results

What The Panel Said – Survey 1, January 2002:
Local Environment:

  • Over 60% of panel members thought their neighbourhood a good place to live
  • Over 70% are happy to stay in their neighbourhood for the foreseeable future.
  • The Panel thought that housing investments have made a big difference to the area.
  • However - there were also concerns about litter, the run-down appearance of some areas, safety issues and lack of facilities/activities for teenagers.
  • There was strong support for more development of children’s play areas, safe parking, community parks and sports facilities.
  • More facilities for recycling and dealing with litter and dumping were also suggested.
  • A lot of interest was expressed in a range of recreational and creative activities locally. Panel members were interested in concerts, cinema and theatre; and activities like photography, web design, sports events, fitness classes and so on.
  • Members also thought there was a need for more information and more community events for local residents of all ages. Activities for people with disabilities and families, and increased access to sports and leisure, are important issues.

What The Panel Said – Survey 2, September 2002:
Childcare, Training and Learning:

  • Friends and family play a large role in childcare, however a significant number of Panel members would consider using services like out of school care, nurseries, crèches, day care and child minders.
  • Barriers to childcare include low awareness of available options, perceived cost, timings and availability.
  • 29% say they are interested in learning, but don’t think there is anything suitable for them. 72% want to see more training and learning available in Greater Easterhouse
  • 14% are currently involved in formal learning, 7% informal learning, reflecting a wide range of interests.
  • Those did recently take up learning said there were lots of benefits - gaining new skills (39%), training for a job/work (33%); getting a specific qualification (31%), or improving their overall education (29%). Learning for self-esteem, enjoyment and social and personal development was also as important as economic factors.
  • There is a range of reasons for non-participation in local learning - disability, illness or mobility problems are the most common factors. Ensuring there is support and access to local training and learning facilities is therefore a priority.
  • There is excellent awareness of John Wheatley College locally (88%).
  • Encouragingly, 48% of respondents say it likely they will participate in training or learning opportunities in the future. The single factor which would be most likely to encourage future uptake is “more information”.
  • The most common area of interest is how to use computers/the Internet. (40%); and 33% across all age ranges are interested in taking up leisure interests, such as music, crafts, aromatherapy and languages.

Aims & Objectives

The overall aim of the People’s Panel is to consult a wide cross-section of the local community regularly on a variety of local issues, and to report consultation findings to the Greater Easterhouse Partnership, related organisations and the local community. The Panel broadly represents the profile of the Greater Easterhouse population. Panel members’ views therefore help influence and develop Partnership activities, new initiatives and strategy locally.
