Employment Skills in the Community
Is a new opportunity, for people in Greater Easterhouse to develop skills, qualifications and experience to compete in the job market, as well as to help out in the local community Learning Centers and gain work experience.
This course has been designed so participants can retain benefits while getting the foundation skills and qualifications for employment. The local community will also benefit with participants spending one day a week on work placement, assisting learners in the local Learning Centres of Greater Easterhouse Learning network.
John Wheatley College has been successful in securing funding for the course through the Scottish European Social Fund (ESF) Objective 3 Partnership.

This programme is aimed at:
Residents of Greater Easterhouse, over 16 years of age, who are unemployed and claiming benefits and, despite being keen to work, lack appropriate skills, qualifications and experience to compete in the job market.
It is envisaged that candidates would be happy to work in a community setting – in this case, assisting learners in the local Learning Centres of Greater Easterhouse Learning network.
Candidates do not require any previous experience of working with computers, or any qualifications.
Programme content
Students will undertake the following SQA certificated subjects:
- Communications Skills
- Information Technology Skills
- CV Preparation
- Job Searching
- Interview Techniques
- Team Working
- Problem Solving Skills
- First Aid
- Health & Safety at Work
Students would also gain work experience in a local Learning Centre, supporting the learners to take advantage of fast internet-connected computers.
Programme structure
The programme will run for four hours per day, 9.30am -12noon and 1.00pm – 2.30pm, for four days per week.
Three of these days will consist of campus-based learning at the College’s Easterhouse campus, and one day spent on work placement at a local Learning Centre.
Programme start
Monday, 23rd October, 2006.
The programme is expected to run for 36 weeks in the above format.
Work placement
There will be a further three weeks work placement at the end of the programme.
Students will receive:
- Lunch vouchers to assist with lunch costs
- Zone card for the duration of the programme
- £150 clothing allowance (for job interviews)
- A maximum of £120 per week towards Childcare costs
(all the above are subject to acceptable attendance on the programme)
Other information
As the programme is not more than 16 hours per week, students should be able to retain any benefits they currently claim.
