Family Learning Week a Huge Success in Greater Easterhouse
Family Learning Week – a UK wide campaign aiming to raise awareness of the importance and potential of family learning – was a huge success this summer with local families getting in on the learning act at community centres across Greater Easterhouse.
This year’s week long event was coordinated by the Greater Easterhouse Learning Network (GELN) and ran in five learning centres including the Cranhill Women’s Forum, Glenburn Centre, F.A.R.E., Pavillion and Robert Bennie Centre at the end of June. Family fun was the theme with an Internet treasure hunt for kids and Computers Don’t Bite/Webwise/Touch Typing, as well for the mums and dads. Staff from the GELN were on hand to show families how they could make the most of the Internet, email and Microsoft packages.
Judy Long, Network Development Officer for GELN said: “We wanted to show parents and carers that learning isn’t just for kids – it’s a whole family experience which can boost their kids learning while at the same time open up new leisure, education and job opportunities for them too.”
Jane Robinson who attended the event at F.A.R.E. said: “It was great idea to run the event just as the school holidays were starting as it gave the kids some fun things to do and also gave me the chance to see what the local learning centre had to offer. I’ve always wanted to know more about the Internet and this was a great chance to get started.”
