Easterhouse Festival Day – local talent in the arts is
top notch
FUN for all the family, with something for everyone - that's
what Festival Day in Greater Easterhouse on Saturday 31 July promises
local residents. What’s more, this year’s summer event
– supported by Greater Easterhouse Partnership and formerly
known as the Carnival – has a ‘Native American’
theme and promises to be a true celebration of locally produced
arts.
Some of the exciting attractions lined up for this summer's key
holiday event that will take place in and around Auchinlea Park,
Provanhall House and Easterhouse Sports Centre - all on Auchinlea
Road, Easterhouse – between 12.00 noon and 4.00pm include
the chance to visit a spectacular Tepee village, watch an exciting
puppet show, listen to live bands and DJs and enjoy art exhibitions
and performances from local drama groups. Not forgetting sporting
activities and stalls - and even the launch of new community radio
station Easthall FM!
Visitors will also have the opportunity to view the replica of
the famous Ghost Dance Shirt given back to the Lakota Sioux by
Glasgow City Council in 1999 when it makes an exciting first appearance
at a community event.
The ‘Native American’ theme for the festival came
about after a group of visitors from Seattle who were in Easterhouse
to attend a local ballet performance commented on how similar
Greater Easterhouse Partnership’s desire to create a more
positive future for young people was to that of the Native American
community’s in Seattle.
A colourful Carnival Procession will get the day's events off
to a fun-filled start. Over three hundred adults and children,
including representatives and members of local community groups,
wearing costumes of their own creation, will set off from Westwood
Business Centre, Aberdalgie Road at 12.00 noon and make their
way to Auchinlea Park. In recognition of all the hard work people
have put into costumes for the procession, there will be awards
for Best Group Costume and Best Individual Costume.
Treats in store at Auchinlea Park include live local bands, both
contemporary and traditional, a spectacular Tepee village created
by local school children and a children’s area. Whilst at
Provanhall House experience local drama performances and an arts
exhibition by The Trondra History and Arts Group that draws fascinating
parallels between Scottish and Native American cultures. Stalls
at Easterhouse Sports Centre will provide a flavour of what community
organisations in the area have to offer.
Festival Day, coordinated by Greater Easterhouse Arts Forum,
is an annual
event and the culmination of a project involving children and
family groups from
across Greater Easterhouse who have been participating in free
arts workshops over the last few weeks.
This year, the event forms part of a wider Greater Easterhouse
Festival which consists of a number of themed events running throughout
the year. Festival Day will be followed by Doors Open Day at Provanhall
House on 18 and 19 September when local performing arts company
Visual Statement will treat visitors to a mixture of ballet, dance
and music all with a Native American flavour. A winter festival
is planned for November/ December.
Last year, over 200 people took part in workshops for the parade,
with another 2000 attending on the day. Confident that this year's
Festival Day will be every bit as successful, James Dean, Greater
Easterhouse Arts Team, said:
“Festival Day is all about showcasing local talent from
across Greater Easterhouse and getting local people involved to
make the Festival a real community affair. There really is something
for everyone this year so my message is miss it and you will definitely
miss out, so get along on Saturday 31 July for a brilliant day
out.”
Councillor Jim Coleman, Chair of Greater Easterhouse Partnership
said: “We all want a positive and healthy future for our
children. Greater Easterhouse Partnership is working hard to secure
that future and the Festival is a great way to celebrate the achievements
and talents of local people.
