MORE AWARDS FOR JOHN WHEATLEY COLLEGE !!

John Wheatley College has done it again, winning yet another top award for its excellent teaching and learning methods.

On Monday, the College was presented with the Gold Award for Centre of the Year - College in the 2005 SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority) Annual Awards at a ceremony in the Hilton Hotel, hosted by Kay Adams.

The award celebrates the College’s innovative approach towards exploiting technology to enhance learning and teaching across the curriculum. Each subject area appointed an ILT (Information and Learning Technologies) Champion in their staff who helped to identify and develop flexible learning resources and supported students through the Flexible Learning Units.

The project, which started in 2004, has produced interactive learning by creating online resources, supporting staff development, introducing students to stimulating websites and developing their independence when it comes to study. Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Education (HMIE) identified the ILT Champions initiative as an example of nation-wide good practice at the last College Review in February 2005.

This is the third year in a row that John Wheatley College has been involved in an SQA Gold Award – the 2004 ‘Candidate of the Year’ Award went to Robert Blyth, Hospitality & Catering student and the 2004 ‘Partnership of the Year’ award went to the Greater Easterhouse Learning Network (GELN) where the College is the lead partner. In the previous year, the Gold for ‘Centre of the Year- School’ went to Lochend Community School for their Youthstart programme which was run in partnership with the College.

The College is delighted to win this year’s award and recognises the hard work and commitment of all the staff who have been involved in the initiative.

Ian Graham, College Principal, said:

“Receiving the Gold Award from SQA is a real honour and a testament to the College’s commitment to continuously improve the services and learning experience for our students. Our thanks go to the dedicated staff whose efforts have made the initiative so successful.”
