NEW YOUTH PROGRAMME AT JOHN WHEATLEY COLLEGE
John Wheatley College has just been granted around £140,000 of European (ESF) funding to set up an exciting programme for local young people. The Youthstart Plus programme will allow young, unemployed people to learn valuable skills in the Creative Industries (video production, photography & sound engineering), Hospitality & Catering and Construction Trades. Other essential skills will be provided (such as confidence building and teamwork) and some work experience will also form part of the programme.
Young people coming on to the programme needn’t require qualifications as the project will provide skills and help them work towards Access 3 / Intermediate 1 level qualifications.
Students will, where appropriate, receive a weekly Training Allowance, support with Childcare, Lunch and Travel costs AND there is also a useful Programme Completion Bonus to look forward to!
Although aimed primarily at school-leavers (15+), young people up to the age of 20yrs can join the project which will begin in January 2006 and run full-time for 24 weeks. A second programme will begin in July 2006. It is intended that most applicants will be resident in the East End and Greater Easterhouse Social Inclusion Partnership areas.
There is a high level of support and guidance built in to the programme and it is hoped that this will help students to access job and further learning opportunities in the local area.
