Environmental training and opportunities to employment
Glasgow East Environmental Team (GEET), the environmental team managed by Glasgow East Regeneration Agency is currently delivering a new environmental training project in partnership with John Wheatley College. The project aims to improve Glasgow’s image by reducing litter, graffiti, and vandalism within communities in the East End of Glasgow.
Pilot Environmental Youth Programme
The GEET have just piloted the first Environmental Youth Programme which has supported six young people to become involved in carrying out environmental works within their local area.
As part of the project the young people formed a partnership with Glasgow City Councils Clean Glasgow Campaign and Calvey Housing Association to provide an environmental clean up at the new Calvey Centre in Barlanark. The environmental clean up helped raise the awareness of the young people about their environment, instill a sense of civic responsibility and help to create a happier and healthier environment in which to live.
Help into further employment and training
Thomas McAlister (Environmental Youth Officer) said that:
“the programme is designed to provide the young people with the skills and experience to help them into employment or further training. To be eligible for the programme participants should live in the East End of Glasgow, be 16 – 19 years old and not be in employment, education or training. Participants receive a weekly training allowance and travel expenses”.
