Courageous college award winners

Robert bennie Award

Six students from John Wheatley College this year received the Robert Bennie Award 2006/07 for endeavour and achievement.

The Awards were sponsored by the Robert Bennie Trust, set up after young Robert Bennie’s tragic death six years ago as the result of a road accident.  The funds are intended to assist young people in the community and encourage participation.  Mr Duncan McLean from the Robert Bennie Trust was there to make the awards, as were friends and relatives of Robert.

Award winners nominated by their lecturers

The delighted award winners had been nominated by their lecturers on the basis of each student’s strength and commitment in overcoming obstacles and achieving their goal at College. The students, who were studying on a wide range of John Wheatley College programmes,  were awarded Certificates and gift vouchers by Mr Andy Woolley, Chair of the Board of Management, and Mr Duncan McLean.

Supporting network and partner organisations

Several of this year’s award-winning students had initially come to the College through one of the many partnership arrangements which the College encourages, like those with local schools, Glasgow City Council, Care Leavers Employment Services and the Riddrie Centre to name but a few.  This highlights the importance of collaborative working to provide strong support networks for many students during their learning journey.

Award cermony

Proud families and friends were there to see the ceremony, as were the skilled College and agency staff who have been involved with the Award winning students over the last year or more.

The College is grateful to the Robert Bennie Trust for making the Awards Ceremony so special for each of the well-deserving students.  Mr Alex Kirk, Depute Principal, who welcomed everyone to the event, said,

“John Wheatley College very much appreciates the Robert BennieTrust’s continuing generosity and support as the Awards allow us to recognise the courage, commitment and achievement of those students who have made the greatest effort to reach their goals".
