Local groups go for lottery millions

The People's MillionsThe Friends of Provan Hall and the Friends of Tollcross Park have reached the final stages of the Big Lottery, Peoples Millions competition. They have both won a place on the final list of projects that will feature in TV slots and go forward to the public vote.

Friends of Provan Hall will start an archaeological investigation into the history of the hall.

The Provan Hall scheme would involve an archaeological investigation into the history, including the built form of the hall. Early indications by the National Trust for Scotland and Glasgow Building and Preservation Trust show that the buildings are the substantial core of a much more significant complex of structures.

This exciting project would entail the archaeological investigation of the landscape adjoining the surviving buildings to properly examine the origins of the existing Provan Hall.

The Friends of Provan Hall project will be featured on the ITV Scottish regional evening news programme on Monday, November 26.

Friends of Tollcross Park wants to create a terraced wetland lagoon to provide habitats for birds and pond life

Meanwhile, Friends of Tollcross Park are hoping for Lottery money to create a Terraced Wetland Lagoon adjacent to the burn that runs through the park. The plan is to develop an area, near the bridge that crosses the burn, to provide a habitat for birds and pond life. The Friends of believe this would attract more visitors, particularly school children to the park, and would be a valuable educational resource.

Support from the public

Councillor Ruth Simpson, Glasgow City Council’s Executive Member for Land and Environmental Services, is hoping the public will show their support and get behind the groups’ projects and she says:

“These are exciting proposals and I am delighted both have made it to the final stages. It would be an enormous boost for the area if either Group were successful,”.

You can vote for your favourite

You can vote for your preferred project in a public vote to be screened on STV.  The Friends of Provan Hall project will be featured on the ITV Scottish regional evening news programme on Monday, November 26 and The Friends of Tollcross Park will feature on Thursday 29 November.

The successful bid will be decided by a phone in competition run by Scottish Television to be held over four nights commencing Monday 26 - Thursday 29 November 2007.

The voting number will be available for both projects from 9 am on the day of the broadcast.
