John Wheatley College’s first group with second year joinery apprentices from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), have completed their time at the john Wheatley College.
They will from now on be working full time ‘on-site’ with their employers.
Theory and workplace experience
The apprentices have spent the last two years with their tutor Stephen Ward and other staff members from the college. The college staff have supported the apprentices through the theory and core-skills side of their programme. This has been complemented by the workplace experience they’ve gained with their employers. Their hard work and growing confidence has now paid off and they bid farewell with a simple presentation ceremony at the beginning of May.
Students, about their time at college
The students agreed with Barry when he said,
I really enjoyed the course … and the tutors were great. I’ve got another year on site and I hope to stay with Brick & Steel Construction.
Graham added,
We really bonded well as a group. It’s been great - we’re a lot wiser and certainly much more experienced now.
The College is delighted to have been able to play a key role in supporting these young men and is eager to make sure that they are the first of many young local people, males and females alike, to take up a trade and work their way towards sustainable, well-paid jobs in the construction industry.
Young trailblazers
Stephen Smith, Associate Principal for Vocational Skills at the College, said,
This is just the beginning. We’re very proud of these apprentices and hope that, with the advent of the Commonwealth Games in 2014, they’ll be seen as trailblazers for local employment initiatives for young people.
