Friends of Provan Hall

The Friends of Provan Hall grew out of the Provan Hall Conservation and Heritage Sub-group and was set up on 3 August 2006. We retain close links with the original group but are a separate organisation with our own constitution and funds.

Aims and objectives

We aim to promote a greater awareness of this historic building, to organise or support events at and around the building and to encourage research into its history. We acknowledge the support of Glasgow City Council’s Land Services Department, which is keen to see locally based groups involved in the promotion of its properties.

The property

Provan Hall of course is not a typical City Council property. It is owned by the National Trust for Scotland and is currently managed by the City Council.

Nameconfusion

We call the house “Provan Hall” (two words) and not “Provanhall House” as it is officially known today. In early maps the house is described as Provan Hall or earlier still, as The Hall of Provan, while the nearby mine is described as “Provanhall” (one word). The use of the name Blochairn House for the southern building is modern and confusing. We hope to discuss local place names in future issues and would welcome contributions from readers.

Our friends

Provan Hall has always depended on its friends long before this organisation was created. When the last private owner died in 1934 a group of local businessmen raised funds for essential repairs and arranged the transfer of the property to the then newly formed National Trust for Scotland. Without the generosity of these friends Provan Hall might not have survived. We would like to know more about them.

The group had their inaugural meeting at the Provanhall the 3rd of August.

The meeting was opened by Alex Morrison, Park Development Officer from Glasgow City Council, and future plans for Provanhall was presented by Neil Baxter, Glasgow.
